The Sullivan family has suffered a huge set back, my husband Jacob, was crushed between a loading dock and a full semi truck about a year and a half ago by his trainer, and has been unable to work. The trucking company (Werner Enterprises) who crushed him is withholding benefits. His injuries include: 6 pelvic crush fractures, 2 called open book where the pelvis breaks off of the spine. Internal breeding, Muscle crush injures to the upper legs from knee to hip. Severed ACL in Left knee and tear to meniscus. Much damage to his internal and male parts that I am sure you don’t want to know about.
The short of what happened is… After completing a truck driving class here in Michigan. Jacob was hired by Werner Enterprises – set off to drive with a trainer for 3 weeks before getting his own truck. At the first stop his trainer said he had to take a pee, but that there was no where inside for drivers to go. He said he was going to go behind the trailer. Jacob said he had to go too, and they both jumped out. The trainer went behind the trailer and pee’d when he walked out Jacob said “I’m going in the same place” and he answered “take your time”. Jacob went behind the trailer and started to pee. And for some reason - no one can answer why; the trainer got back in the truck and backed it onto him. Crushing him against the loading dock with the semi truck and trailer.
It is has been a long string of miracles that Jacob has not died. 7 surgeries later and still more to come he has beat the odds and not only lived but has begun to walk as well.
Update on Jay- Doctor has found a broken screw, his hardware is starting to break down and there isn’t a repair for it. Jay has reached is MMI (Maximum Medical Improvement). That is a very overwhelming thought as Jay was a very physical and fit person before the accident. He has many disabilities and has overwhelming pain daily. He can not sit, stand or walk for very long, but the miracle is that he can walk, he beat his odds of only a 30% chance to walk again. He walks in small amounts but seems to have an intolerance for being vertical for too long. He uses a cane, power chair, and wheelchair to get around and is able to walk around the house and small distances. He is also feeling a lot of internal movement and popping when in motion. He is only able to tolerate moving around for a few hours a day, the rest of the time he must lay flat.
Currently, as a family we are working on a "new normal"- life will never be the same. We stay positive and try to do a little something everyday. We are working on adjusting to the limits Jay’s injuries have on our family both monetarily and socially. We miss boating, tubing, riding 4 wheelers, being involved in the kids sports and much more of the things we did as a family. We have lost assets and are behind on many bills. This benefit will be key in helping us keep our home and getting our bills caught up. It is just so hard when the company who hit him sends little over $200 a week for all his injuries and a family of 4. I do the best I can, trying to work when I can and care for my husband and 2 children.
Thank you for all the support and your help in our time of need.
Gob Bless,
Jennifer Sullivan
