Virus infected email messages are on the rise. Most infections are happening when checking external email sources. At Tech Resources, we understand there must be a balance between security and functionality, and that’s why we would like to provide you with some simple steps you can take to protect yourself.
1) If you need access to an external email account (Yahoo, Gmail, etc) let us know and we can configure it to go through the server. This allows our security systems to filter out spam and virus infected emails before they get to your computer. 2) Avoid opening emails from senders you do not recognize. 3) If you receive an email with an attachment that you did not request or do not recognize, do not open it. 4) Note that many times spammers will impersonate legitimate senders such as the IRS, UPS, or some government agency. Keep in mind that none of these entities will send you an attachment unless you request something from them first. In most cases, these attachments will contain viruses. 5) If you receive a personal email with a link that you don’t recognize, wait until you are at home to click it, as there is probably a virus at the other end of the link. 6) If you’re looking for a new personal email address, I suggest Gmail as their spam filtering is by far the best of the free email providers. Note: In many cases, your existing email accounts can be automatically forwarded to a Gmail account. Follow these rules and we’re confident you’ll prevent many virus infections! |
